Ambode commissions major link bridge in Badagry, order construction key road

By Olaolu Oladipo, Lagos Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday commissioned the newly completed Imeke-Ajido Bridge, a major link bridge in Badagry axis of the State. The bridge, which is 500metres long, was designed with sidewalk on both sides. Addressing a mammoth crowd of joyous residents who came out to receive him after walking on the bridge, Governor Ambode said the delivery of the project was a promise kept and an effort aimed at making life comfortable for the people. Before the construction of the bridge by the State Government, the people of the area were said to have been subjected to untold hardship trying to connect Ajido town to Imeke, all suburbs in Badagry. The leader of the dreaded sect, Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau has resurfaced in a new video , saying the claims by the Federal Government that his group has been routed from Sambisa Forest is a ruse. In the video posted on Thursday on Youtube, the Boko Haram insurgent group through its leader, Shekau said, “We are safe. We have not been flushed out of anywhere. And tactics and strategies cannot reveal our location except if Allah wills by his decree.” Flanked by masked armed fighters, the elusive Shekau added that President Muhammadu Buhari should not be distorting the real situation of things as they regard the fight against terrorism in the northeast. “You should not be telling lies to the people. Assembly passes N221.09b Ogun 2017 Appropriation Bill into law

Members of the Ogun House of Assembly on Thursday passed the 2017 Appropriation Bill of N221.09 billion into law. In the document obtained by BLACKFACE, the lawmakers however cut N38.5 million from the initial N221.12 billion presented to the House by Governor Ibikunle Amosun. The bill, passed at plenary, had a recurrent expenditure of N91.4 billion while N118.5 billion was appropriated for capital expenditure with N11.5 billion being the sum from the consolidated revenue fund charges and pensions in 2017. Amosun had on November 22 presented a fiscal proposal of N221.12 billion to the House. Majority Leader of the Assembly, Adeyinka Mafe moved the motion for the third reading which was seconded by Mojeed Soyebo, after which the Clerk, Mr Lanre Bisiriyu, did the third reading. Army arrest 1,240 suspected insurgents as troops mop up Sambisa forests

The Nigeria Army has stated that its personnel have arrested about 1,240 suspected Boko Haram terrorists during a mop-up operation inside the Sambisa forest. Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. -Gen. Lucky Irabor disclosed this while giving update to newsmen on Operation Rescue Final at the Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, the Bono State capital. Giving a breakdown, Irabor said that 413 of the suspects were adults; 323 were female adults; 251 male children, while 253 were female children. He said that the suspects were apprehended during a mop-up operation against the sect members in the forest. “We are interrogating them to know whether they are Boko Haram members, because there is no way somebody that is not their member would live inside Sambisa forest. Residents of Ekiti State have turned to dog meat as the animals have disappeared from the streets as consumption of dog meat by residents has grown remarkable in the last few weeks. The development might not be unconnected with the biting recession in the country that has turned more people of the state to dog meat for their nutrition in spite of the taboo hitherto associated with its consumption the community. In Ado-Ekiti, Ikere-Ekiti, Ise-Ekiti, Emure- Ekiti, Ikole-Ekiti and Otun Ekiti new dog slaughter slabs have sprung up as the residents devour the meat in homes, restaurants and beer parlours. A resident said no fewer than 20 of such slaughter slabs exist in Ado Ekiti alone. Adamawa deputy governor, a Christian donates Mosque to Muslims

The Deputy Governor of Adamawa, Mr Martins Babale, has donated a Juma’at Mosque to Dalasum community in Toungo Local Government Area of the state. Babale said while the presenting the mosque on Wednesday that the measure was an effort to boost peaceful co-existence among the diverse communities in the state. He emphasised that the era of unnecessary conflicts and misunderstanding between followers of different religions was over and stressed the need to live together harmoniously with tolerance. “Today I am fulfilling one of my wishes to our people. I prayed that the Mosque will also serve as a centre which will unite our community,” Babale said. Alhaji Musa Gindau, the District Head of Dalasum, commended the courageous and generous effort of the deputy governor, describing him as a “peace promoter”. SERAP asks EFCC to probe missing N500m Chibok safe school funds

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has petitioned Ibrahim Mustafa Magu, Chairman Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) requesting him to “urgently begin a thorough, transparent and effective investigation into allegation that N500 million Safe School funds for Chibok girls, commissioned by former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to rebuild the Government Girls School in Chibok, is missing and cannot be accounted for.”  The organization urged the EFCC to “invite for questioning, and name and shame anyone suspected to be involved in the alleged diversion, including the contractors allegedly handling the project.” In the petition dated 27 December 2016 and signed by SERAP senior staff attorney Timothy Adewale, the organization said: “The allegation that N500m has been lost to corruption has resulted in denying the girls access to education, and shows the failure of the former President Goodluck Jonathan government to live up to Nigeria’s co

Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola on Wednesday granted amnesty to four death-row prison inmates in three South West prisons. The Director of Public Prosecutions and Secretary to the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, Mr Pomade Adeniji, announced the amnesty in a statement in Osogbo. The statement said the governor’s gesture was in commemoration of the New Year celebrations. “Pursuant to the advice and recommendations of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, Gov. Rauf Aregbesola, in exercise of his powers, has granted amnesty to the prison inmates,’’ the statement said. It said the inmates were serving their jail terms at federal prisons in Ilesha, Ibara and Abeokuta as well as the Maximum Security Prison, Kirikiri in Lagos. It also listed the inmates as Kolawole Adediji and Madelon Adediji, both on the death row and now set free. Kiss Daniel escapes death as robbers storm Calabar Carnival

Popular musician, Kiss Daniel missed death by whiskers when armed robbers stormed the popular Christmas Village in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, on Christmas Day. People usually pay rent to the state government to operate shops in the village for the one-month (December 1-December 31) end of year activities. During the raid that lasted for about 45 minutes, the armed robbers mobbed and robbed vendors and their customers. Kiss Daniel, was on the stage performing when the robbers struck, shooting sporadically into the sky to scare away people who began to scamper to safety. The ensuing panic resulted in several injured persons being taken to the hospital but it could not be confirmed if anyone was killed during the incidence. The Kano State Government has suspended a Director in the Ministry of Finance and 9 staff of the Ministry of Local Government over alleged diversion of millions of Naira meant for payment of salaries. This is contained in a statement signed by the state’s Head of Service, Alhaji Muhammad Na’iya and made available to newsmen in Kano on Tuesday. The statement further revealed that the nine local government employees were scheduled officers under the platform of REMITA. According to the report, the government has handed over four employees of the Kano State Pension Funds Trustee, including two top members of Kano Pension Union to police authorities for investigation. The four persons, whose case files had been handed over to the state Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission for investigation, were accused of connivance to siphon public funds. NCAA fines Arik Air N6m over passenger baggage delay

Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a N6 million fine to Arik Air Limited for contravening the provisions of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs). The NCAA also ordered the airline to pay its passengers, whose baggage were delayed on the London to Lagos route between December 2 and 4 the sum of  $150 each as compensation. The authority disclosed this in a statement signed by its General Manager, Public Relations, Mr Sam Adurogboye,   in Lagos on Tuesday, saying the NCAA discovered that Arik Air violated Part 19.7.2 and 19.17.2.1 (ii) of the Nig.CARs 2015. The statement said the authority was earlier inundated with complaints of delay and inability to ferry the passengers’ checked – in luggage on the airline’s services from London to Lagos from December 2 to 4. Dutch club appoints Sunday Oliseh as coach

A former coach and captain of the Super Eagles, Mr. Sunday Oliseh, has secured appointment as the head coach of the Dutch second tier clubside, Fortuna Sittard. Borno State Governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima has called for detailed investigation on what happened to the N500 million said to have been released for the reconstruction of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok. The administration of former president Goodluck Jonathan had announced the release of the money after the abduction of Chibok school girls. Former Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala had flown to Chibok to inaugurate the N500 million rebuilding project under the Safe School Initiative programme. The Calabar Monorail officially opened to the public for use on Monday following a directive from Cross River Governor, Senator Ben Ayade. Over 100 tourists seeking fun enjoyed a free ride courtesy of the governor on the 1.2 Kilometre facility linking the Tinapa premier business and leisure resort to the Calabar International Convention Center as part of the state’s Boxing Day activities. Lagos to embark on audit of utility infrastructure next month

The Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA) has said that it would commence audit of underground and over the ground utility infrastructures within the geographical boundaries of the State in January 2017. According to the agency, the move is aimed at ascertaining the quality and quantum of the infrastructures and guide in proper regulation and planning. Chief Executive Officer of LASIMRA, Mr. Babajide Odekunle disclosed this at a Stakeholders’ Forum with telecommunication service providers and others recently. Odekunle said the audit became imperative owing to the urgent need to determine the actual telecommunication and water cables as well as gas and water pipelines under the ground and on the ground for effective planning especially with regards to development and redevelopment of the city. Lawmaker raises alarm as herdsmen kill 3 in Niger attack

Herdsmen have attacked three communities in Shiroro Local Government area of Niger State killing three people leaving several others critically injured on Christmas Eve. In all, over 1,000 cattle and a number of sheep were rustled away by the herdsmen after holding the communities hostage for several hours. The affected communities are Kaure, Ajatan and Kwaki, all in Shiroro local government area of the state. This attack came barely two weeks after some communities within the area, Baga, Alawa, Tunga-Sakai, Laye and Dnakau came under heavy attack from about 50 armed bandits suspected to be Fulani Herdsmen which left four people dead. Influential media organizations in partnership with Union Bank and UN-OCHA unveil Wecare4IDPs

As part of efforts to improve the conditions of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the country, notable media organizations in partnership with Union Bank have publicly announced the launch of the WeCare4IDPs campaign. WeCare4IDPs is a citizenship initiative which creates a platform for all Nigerians – individuals and corporate bodies to be a part of the solution in matters concerning IDPs by raising funds to support them.   The WeCare4IDPs campaign is calling on 1 million Nigerians to donate at least N1,000 during the campaign which runs from December 16th to December 31st.  Funds raised will go directly to funding direct impact projects defined in the 2017 Nigeria Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) developed by the United Nations Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) with the support of the Federal Ministry of Budget and Planning.   It is estimated that more than 8.5 million people have been affected by the insurgency in the North East and require humanit
