Learn The Risks of On-Line Dating

Image
The on-line scams are numerous and recurring. Most of them cost you money. And worse! Just today, someone co-opted a friend of ours by using a fake email address similar to his and sending it to a zillion people asking them to wire him money. According to the fake message, he “had lost his bag with his money, his credit cards, and his passport” in England. Nothing could be further from the truth. Here’s the truth – he did NOT lose his bag. He was not traveling in England, and the message was a clear attempt to extort money from his friends under false pretenses. And while we acknowledge that some one-in-five new relationships in the USA currently begin on the Internet through on-line dating services, we also note that there are risks associated with utilizing these services, similar to the scam perpetrated on our friend. Our research over the years has suggested to us that there are at least SEVEN major risks associated with on-line dating . Here they are in a

America Citizen Abducted By Al Qaeda Makes Plea to Obama

A U.S. government contractor kidnapped by al Qaeda more than two years ago appeared in a new video making a desperate plea to President Obama. Watch Steve Centanni's report from this morning above. Here's the full story from Associated Press: The video of Warren Weinstein was the first since two videos released in September 2012. Jesus and Mary: It's complicated- By Jay Parini

Image
No image is more central to the story of Christmas than that of baby Jesus in the arms of his mother, Mary. It was painted and sculpted over and over again, by such artists as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. It's a picture of tender mercy and boundless love between a mother and her son. But these first gentle moments (even experienced in the humble environs of a manger) are perhaps the easiest of any parent-child relationship. The story that would develop for Jesus and his mother, as presented in the gospels, was complicated, and not very unlike what happens in many families: a tale of enchantment, then disenchantment, of resistance and reconciliation. The first scene in the Gospels after the Nativity occurs when Jesus is 12, on the cusp of adolescence. The boy accompanies his family to Jerusalem for Passover week. After the celebrations, his family leaves -- failing to notice that Jesus has been left behind. Searching for three frantic days, at last t

Real Reason Why North Korea Leader Executed His Uncle

Image
SEOUL, South Korea — The execution of the uncle of Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s leader, had its roots in a firefight between forces loyal to Mr. Kim and those supporting the man who was supposed to be his regent, according to accounts that are being pieced together by South Korean and American officials. The clash was over who would profit from North Korea’s most lucrative exports: coal, clams and crabs. North Korean military forces were deployed to retake control of one of the sources of those exports, the rich crab and clam fishing grounds that Jang Song-thaek, the uncle of the country’s untested, 30-year-old leader, had seized from the military. In the battle for control of the fishing grounds, the emaciated, poorly trained North Korean forces “were beaten — very badly — by Uncle Jang’s loyalists,” according to one official. The rout of his forces appears to have been the final straw for Mr. Kim, who saw his 67-year-old uncle as a threat to his authority over th

Kalashnikov, The Designer of AK-47 Dies at 94

Image
Mikhail Kalashnikov, designer of the most iconic weapon of the 20th century, has died at the age of 94, according to a report from the Associated Press. He is known primarily for developing the AK-47, an assault rifle that was heavily exported by the Soviet Union. More than 100 million AK-47s have been built since 1947, according to estimates, and various versions of the gun are still widely used by militaries around the world. The gun has become one of the world's most ubiquitous weapons, even showing up on Mozambique's flag . Although other assault rifles have improved on Kalashnikov's design, the weapon's reliability (it reportedly rarely jams) and pervasiveness (the weapon is easy to find and thus easy to fix with replacement parts) have kept it on battlefields, including the ongoing conflict in Syria . The design of the weapon combined various gun inventions of the era, most importantly gas-operated reloading that powered automatic firing. After t

You will recall that all the letters were brought to me by hand. Although both of us discussed some of the issues in those letters, I had not, before now, seen the need for any formal reply since, to me, they contained advice from a former President to a serving President. Obviously, you felt differently because in your last letter, you complained about my not acknowledging or replying your previous letters. It is with the greatest possible reluctance that I now write this reply. I am most uneasy about embarking on this unprecedented and unconventional form of open communicatio

The10 most Horrible Movies of 2013- Yahoo

Image
We take no joy in trashing the work of others, which is why even though our list of The Best Movies of 2013 is 25 films deep, and the list below is only 10. Still, some movies leave such a bad aftertaste that crafting a list of the year's biggest stinkers felt like a professional responsibility. From unfunny comedy to laughable sci-fi to depressing, franchise-tainting action, here are the movies we enjoyed the very least this year.  10. "The Hangover Part III"   The third (and thankfully final) installment in director Todd Phillips's lucrative franchise played more like a dark, humorless action film than a compelling, guys-gone-wild comedy. Stale characters, lack of a narrative, and an excessive amount of animal cruelty jokes made many realize that the Wolfpack should have been euthanized after the first, unnecessary sequel. —Matt Whitfield  9. "Oldboy"   Whatever new and unique ideas Spike Lee and Josh Brolin attempted to bring
