The Satanic Temple has announced it will be moving its international headquarters to the original hometown of the Salem witch trials.

The Satanist religious organisation, which uses Lucifer as a symbol of rebellion, will open their doors at the Victorian mansion in Massachusetts later this week.

The building, based close to a Catholic church and an elementary school, will also feature a 7.5ft-tall bronze statue of Baphomet - the group's goat-headed deity.

Twenty people, including 14 women, were executed during the witch trials in Salem between 1692 and 1693.

Lucien Greaves, a spokesperson for the Satanic Temple, said: “Salem emerged as an obvious choice to be established as the base for our operations.

"In addition to Salem’s history and proximity to the intellectual hub of Boston, the people we have spoken to have been incredible friendly and supportive.

"Salem is quaint, and quite lovely, and we intend to contribute to the cultural climate while maintaining the community’s high standards.
