AU Summit delegate robbed by bogus Nigerian cops in South Africa
JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police have confirmed a delegate due to attend the 25th African Union (AU) Summit was robbed while travelling from OR Tambo International Airport to Sandton on Wednesday night.
It's believed the men who robbed Nigerian official Gabriel Gundo were posing as Nigerian police officers on Marlboro Drive in Sandton.
The 55-year-old was robbed of $500 and R700.
Gundo found himself at the Sandton Police Station in the early hours of this morning to make a statement about his ordeal shortly after arriving in South Africa.
He was pulled over by an unknown number of men in a Hyundai at the Marlboro and N1 Highway interchange while travelling to his hotel in Sandton.
He said the men produced Nigerian police identification.
The Hawks are now looking into whether the robbery was planned or if Gundo’s cab was followed from the airport.
The International Relations Department has said the incident will be handled by the police.
