<span style="color: #606060; font-family: Open Sans, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px;">Let me on behalf of the government and people of Lagos State express deep appreciation to the Chairman, the executives and members of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Lagos State chapter for keeping faith with this annual programme aimed at seeking divine intervention in the affairs of our State. I believe this yearly congregation is one of the major reasons for the progress and prosperity our State has continuously witnessed. I have no doubt that today’s service will usher in the presence of God as we reverence him in intense words and prayers.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 15px; text-align: justify;">

<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 15px; text-align: justify;">
There is nothing prayers cannot do in the lives of people who look upon the Lord and surrender their affairs in His able hands. In the book of 1Thessalonian 5:17, we are commanded to pray without ceasing After all, Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ started with prayer and ended with prayer.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 15px; text-align: justify;">

<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 15px; text-align: justify;">
‘Humility in Service’, the theme of this Divine Service says it all. John 13:1-16 where the theme is taken from demonstrates Christ’s complete love for his disciples knowing fully well that he would be betrayed, denied and deserted for a time by them. It also showed the humility of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is to tell us that as believers, we must exemplify Christ-like behaviour by loving and caring for one another. Above all, as Christians and leaders, we must show humility in service because it is a privilege to be called upon to serve.</div>

Without doubt, the prayers of the saints have been keeping us together as a people, and more importantly, it is the reason for the prevailing peace and prosperity we are enjoying in Lagos State even in the period of economic recession. I have no doubts in my mind that as we cry unto God today for a better and promising future for Lagos State, He will surely listen to our cries.</span></span></div>

<div>
A 27-year-old tattoo artist from England who goes by the name Eli Ink is making a name for himself as he is turning his skin black by using coats of ink.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In his own words "‘I’ve always been blown away by art itself. Picasso is a huge childhood inspiration to me, especially abstract art, but I do like all forms of art. Body art was just the next local step for me growing up.’</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You can easily see his obsession with the abstract on his own body. It's a philosophy that guides the choices he makes. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
'I wanted to look like an abstract character in one of Picasso’s paintings. I love the abstract look, no thought, just pure expression,' </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
‘My work is not perfect, there is still room for improvement, everyone must start somewhere.’</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Eli said the negative reactions don’t bother him anymore.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
‘The best is always nice compliments, that’s always nice to hear, either from tattoo collectors or just passers-by, the worst is always older generation looking down on you and making you feel worthless.’</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
'But this is all a state of mind. I don’t take much notice anymore,' he said.</div>
</div>
<div>

<br />
According to Diego Maradona’s lawyer, the Argentine legend has been refused entry to the USA for insulting president Donald Trump.<br />
<br />
The 57-year-old former World Cup winner wanted to obtain a visa to travel to Miami, Florida, for a court case involving his ex-wife, Claudia Villafane.<br />
<br />
However, Maradona’s lawyer, Matias Morla, appeared on Argentine TV show Buenos Dias America and discussed comments the legendary player made on Venezuelan network TeleSur.<br />
<br />
“You can imagine, I was in the embassy and I said ‘Diego, please don’t talk about the United States’. Because the interview was with TeleSur and I know how these things go.<br />
<br />
“And the second question was ‘What do you think of Donald Trump’?<br />
<br />
<b>“He said ‘Donald Trump is a chirolita (a slang term for dummy or puppet)?’ After this, I said I’m going to have to represent you in Miami instead.”</b><br />
<br />
The court case in Miami surrounds Villafane allegedly buying seven apartments in Miami with money she stole from Maradona.<br />
<br />
Maradona is currently the head coach of Al-Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, but he has been denied entry to the USA in the past after taking drugs during the 1994 World Cup.<br />

<br />
<br />
Have you met a 24-year-old woman that is just 2 feet tall?<br />
<br />
I bring to you Jyoti Amge, an Indian woman notable for being the world's smallest living woman in the world according to Guinness World Records.<br />
Amge’s height is due to a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia. It is a genetic disorder that affects bone growth, causing short stature and disproportionately short limbs. She was declared the shortest woman in the world in 2001 at the age of 18. At that time, she weighed just 11 pounds!<br />
<img alt="Image result for Jyoti Amge" src="http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/Images/Jyoti%20%20main_tcm25-13864.jpg" /><br />
<br />
Jyoti Amge (2 ft 0.6 in) and Sultan Kösen (<span style="color: #222229; font-family: "montserrat" , sans-serif;">8 ft 2.82 in</span>) met up in Egypt for a photoshoot and the resulting pictures are amazing! The project was organized by the Egyptian tourism promotion board, and it’s safe to say it is garnering quite a bit of attention.<br />
<img src="http://www.viralthread.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/A1-14.png" height="549" width="640" /><br />
<br />
Howbeit, she looks roughly the size of Kosen’s shoes!<br />
<br />
And who is <b><span class="NormalTextRun SCXW165224296" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222229; font-family: "montserrat" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">Sultan </span><span class="TextRun SCXW165224296" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222229; font-family: "montserrat" , sans-serif; font-size: 16px;"><span class="SpellingError SCXW165224296" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Kosen?</span></span></b><br />

<br />
<br />
In just two days into season three of the TV reality show, BB Naija has recorded it's first romantic moment.<br />
<br />
In the less than 15secs video, both were seen sharing some passionate kisses..<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Q-7KmxJhEFM/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Q-7KmxJhEFM?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This comes as quite a surprise because it appeared Miracle was quite enamoured by Ifu Ennada orginally and Nina has made it clear that she is very serious about her boyfriend outside the House.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Was this just a case of carnal attraction or are both Miracle and Nina making moves as a part of a strategy?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
Lagos, January 28, 2018 - After months of anticipation, the third edition of Africa’s biggest reality TV show, Big Brother Naija, premiered with the expected excitement and intrigue at 7pm Nigerian time on DStv channel 198 and GOtv channel 29. The show returns with an all new house and an increase in the number of housemates, as 20 Nigerians will now vie for N45 million Naira worth of prizes.<br />
<br />
The Regional Director, M-Net West Africa, Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu, said: “Our viewers have been waiting for the return of Big Brother Naija, and after weeks of auditions around Nigeria, where we selected a mix of 20 people from different areas and with different, exciting personalities, we are thrilled to begin the show and can’t wait to see how the housemates compete against each other. The game has begun, and we urge our viewers to stay tuned!”<br />
<br />
The show kicked off with the host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu welcoming audiences in the studio and across the continent, after which Nigerian act Mayorkun performed his hit single, ‘Mama’. Ebuka then proceeded to give a tour of the all new Big Brother House, and viewers were then introduced to the first four housemates, whom the host dubbed the “lucky four”, given they had never previously auditioned for Big Brother or any other reality show, and made it through with their first try.<br />
<br />
The first four housemates, Nina, Vandora, Teddy A and K. Brule, were immediately tasked with playing a game of corresponding numbers. The excitement continued as viewers were introduced to Princess, Alex, Dee One and Miracle, the second set of four housemates introduced to the house, who were also tasked with finding beds with corresponding numbers.<br />
<br />
The show continued with the frenzied tempo as rave of the moment, Kiss Daniel, got on stage to perform his hot track, also titled ‘’Mama’, following which Ebuka proceeded to introduce the next set of housemates who excitingly have had some experience in the Nigerian film and television industry – Ahnneka, Bam Bam, Rico Swavey and Bitto were all also asked with selecting numbers that corresponded with beds inside the house.<br />
<br />
Proving just how truly diverse the house is, the very next set of housemates comprise business minded individuals, and viewers got to meet Khloe, Ifu Ennada, Angel and Leo.<br />
<br />
Mayorkun returned on stage and wowed audiences with a rendition of his hit song, ‘Che che ‘. Viewers were then given the chance to see how the 16 housemates introduced so far were getting along. Next up was the last set of four housemates, dubbed “the intellectuals” by Ebuka, by virtue of having advanced university degrees. Anto, Cee-C, Lolu and Tobi entered the house, and Ebuka proceeded to inform viewers of the plot twist that awaits the housemates during next week’s live show, with Kiss Daniel bringing the show to a close with his hot track ‘Yeba’.<br />

See gbege... Just three weeks to walking down the aisle with his fiancee, a Nigerian man was heartbroken to stumble upon a dirty secret between his heartthrob and his best man.<br />
<br />
It was gathered that the man’s girlfriend of 5 years was sleeping with his best man. Here’s @Jenniieey’s tweets;<br />
<div>
----------------------------</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
What will u do if u find out ur fiance/fiancee is cheating on u with d bridesmaid/bestman 3 weeks to ur wedding?. My friend is devastated right now & totally confused,He gav me permission to post his story. He caught his fiancee wiv his best man(best friend)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
They’ve been dating for over 5yrs & got engaged last year and the wedding is suppose to happen in 3weeks.. He love this babe so much, he’s done stuff for her, he treated her like a Queen and respect her.. most times wen she comes around to his place</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
His friends r around after work.. He introduced her to one of them who is his best friend years ago and not best man but I guess they went behind his back and took the introduction to another level.. although he said he was suspecting the closeness</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But he thought he was just paranoid and didn’t think a thing like that could happen between them..cos he trust both of them.. but for years they’ve been doing stuff behind his back..They all hang out, eat together and gist but nothing prepared him for this</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
He traveled few days ago and was suppose to come back Thursday..but 4days ago, another friend called him to inform him that something is not right with his bride to be and his best man that he is only telling him cos he feels it’s d right thing to do</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My friend thought dis guy who told him stuff was just one of those bad Belle people who don’t want u to settle down..he kept thinkin about it but didn’t tell anyone.So yesterday he decided to leave Abuja for Lagos but didn’t tell anyone he had changed his plan</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
He cancelled his travel from Thursday (4days from now) and brought it to yesterday..he arrived Lagos and went home straight but in mind he was praying that everything he heard was not true..he got home (his fiancee stays with him) and used his key</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
He went straight to the bedroom and when he opened the door, he said he almost fainted.. everything was true.. she was in bed wiv his best man and he said he didn’t know wat to do but that if he had reacted,he wud have attacked his friend because he betrayed him</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So he said he just turned back and closed the door and left the house for them .. he went to his mom’s house but don’t know what and how to tell her what he saw .. How do u tell u mom u saw ur bride to be in bed with your best man 3weeks to ur wedding</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Everything is done and ready .. invitation cards sent out, hall booked.. and the funniest thing she’s been calling and texting that it’s a mistake and she’s sorry but he should not cancel the wedding cause people will shame her and insult her</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
She even got her mom to call him to talk to him but she didn’t tell her mom d reason y he’s angry wiv her, she just tod her mom that they had a fight and he’s not talking to her.. my friend said he doesn’t know how and if to tell his fiancee’s mom wat he saw</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
He’s confused and doesn’t know what to do, if to cancel d wedding or tell his mom or his fiancee’s mom what really happened but according to him he can’t trust her again or his best man and can’t have d wedding with her and he has tod her already</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But how will he tell his family and her family about his decision to cancel the wedding..visitors coming for d wedding, how will he inform them.. he needs to know the right way to handle this situation..he is reading my thread so pls tell him...</div>

The Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army carried out a joint operation that led to the killing of Oluchi Igwedibia alias Obata Osu, younger brother of Late Don Wanny.<br />
<img src="https://www.nationalhelm.co/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/oluchi-igwedibia-1.jpg" /><br />
<br />
The younger brother of Late Don Wanny who was amongst the 32 Cultists declared wanted by the State Security Council was killed at Sabo Iyakpe, Etsako West in Edo State on Sunday, January 28, 2018, following accurate DSS intelligence.<br />
<br />
The late Wanny, Igwedibia and his gang members received amnesty from the Rivers Government in 2016 but later went back to crime.<br />
<br />
The Late Oluchi Igwedibia alias Obatosu played a prominent role in the New Year killings by Don Wanny gang in Omoku.<br />
<br />
Governor Wike declared that none of those declared wanted by the Rivers State Security Council will go free, saying that they will all be brought to justice.<br />
<br />
The governor further declared that the N20million bounty placed for credible information that will lead to the arrest of the wanted cultists is still in place.<br />
<br />
He stated all those who participated in the New Year Mayhem at Omoku and any other security infraction in the state will be traced and brought to justice.<br />

Obatosu allegedly participated in the brutal murder of 23 persons in Omoku, Rivers State, on Jan. 1, 2018.<br />
<br />
He was the Field Commander of the murderous gang.Igwedibia, after fleeing Omoku town (Rivers) went to Ughelli (Delta) to reside. He then later rented an apartment in Edo State, four days ago (Jan. 24) as part of his plan to avoid arrest.<br />
<br />

<br />
Dr. Chris Ngige, in a speech in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State where he went to inspect the facilities for the burial of the late Statesman, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, told the people in attendance that Buhari's administration is expected to spend a whooping 1bn for the burial.<br />
<br />
In his words...<br />
Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, says President Muhammadu Buhari will ensure former Vice President, late Dr. Alex Ekwueme, gets a befitting burial.<br />
<br />
He said Buhari had committed about N1bn on Ekwueme from the day the Federal Government took over his medical bills to date.<br />
<br />
Ngige spoke on Sunday at Ekwueme’s hometown in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State after inspecting facilities for the burial of the late VP.<br />
<br />
“You know that I belong to the Ekwueme family; I’m part of that family.<br />
<br />
“I’m in various committees and subcommittees for the burial of this great statesman. I can tell you authoritatively that Mr. President (Buhari) is committed and passionate in ensuring a befitting burial for Ekwueme.<br />
<br />
“If he doesn’t come for the burial himself, I’m sure the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, will be here for the burial as a matter of right.<br />
<br />
“So, I’m here to inspect the facilities in preparation for his burial; and I can tell you that I’m satisfied with the progress of work.<br />
<br />
“The Federal Government is doing rehabilitation works on Amawbia/Ekwulobia road, up to Uga and Akokwa in Imo State.<br />
<br />
“We’re also doing road rehabilitation on Oko/Umunze road up to Ibinta in Abia State.<br />
<br />
“I know the cost of all this, not less than N480m.<br />
<br />
“The Federal Government is building the mausoleum, which will contain a modern library and other facilities and I also know the cost of that too.<br />
<br />
“And remember that the Federal Government took up all the medical bills of flying him abroad and bringing him back to Nigeria from London upon his death.<br />
<br />
“The cost of hiring an air ambulance is not a joke. So, Buhari has honoured this Igbo son in all ramifications.<br />
<br />
“He has committed not less than a billion naira in this project because he is passionate about it”.<br />

<br />
A Sexbot company 'Realbotix' has announced that it will be releasing a male sex robot with a “bionic penis” that would be “better than a vibrator.”<br />
<br />
The CEO of Realbotix,Matt McMullen, in an interview with Daily Star Online revealed that his company plans to release a male sexbot in 2018.<br />
said, “We’ll eventually have a male and a female platform available.” He explained that the male robot could be plugged in to “go as long as you want” and that “the sky’s the limit” when it comes to penis size. He also says that the robot’s body would look like the male sex dolls currently made by sister company RealDoll.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
According to McMullen, the push for a male sex robot is all about equality. “We have equal interest in male and female versions of what we’re doing,” he told The Star. “We get a lot of people gravitating to the fact that we’ve just made a female robot so far. People have accused us of objectifying women, but it’s important that people know that this is more than a sex toy.” Indeed, McMullen claims, many women are interested in male robots as “companions to talk to and interact with.”</div>

<img src="https://img.providr.com/47DBDD2200000578-5244155-image-m-5_1515351434538.jpg" /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Not everyone is convinced by McMullen’s sunny optimism. According to teledildonics developer Kyle Machulis, none of today’s sexbots is even close to the real thing. “We aren’t anywhere near there in terms fidelity yet in sex toys, or really, in any market sector involving robots,” Machulis recently told Motherboard. </div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In Summation, the lines between humans and Robots is closing up and in the nearest future, these might be a norm.</div>

A Customary Court in Lagos has dissolved the marriage between a couple, Mr. Rasheed Abiola and his wife Fatimot over irreconcilable differences arising from the disobedience of the wife from wearing trousers.<br />
<br />
Delivering the Judgement, Mr Akin Akinniyi, the President of the Court pronounced the marriage dissolved urging both parties to go their separate ways without any form of hindrance or molestation.<br />
<br />
The 47-year-old customs officer said that his wife was threatening him from marrying another wife.<br />
<br />
“Fatimot is threatening to harm me if I make any attempt to marry another woman. “But Fatimot and I have not been sleeping together as husband and wife for years,” he said. “She once left the house and never return until after a year,” the estranged husband said. According to him, he is experiencing depression because he does not have peace of mind. He begged the court to dissolve the union that he did not love her again, he wants to move on with his life. However, Fatimot said that her husband kicked against her wearing trouser claiming she wanted to be trading in prostitution. She said that she never threatened him not to marry another wife. The mother of three children urged the court to grant her husband’s wish.<br />

Martin Luther King Jr. was a social activist and Baptist minister who played a key role in the American civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968. King sought equality and human rights for African Americans, the economically disadvantaged and all victims of injustice through peaceful protest. He was the driving force behind watershed events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the 1963 March on Washington, which helped bring about such landmark legislation as the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and is remembered each year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a U.S. federal holiday since 1986.<br />
<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>WHEN WAS MARTIN LUTHER KING BORN?</b><br />
Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, the second child of Martin Luther King Sr., a pastor, and Alberta Williams King, a former schoolteacher.<br />
<br />
Along with his older sister Christine and younger brother Alfred Daniel Williams, he grew up in the city’s Sweet Auburn neighborhood, then home to some of the most prominent and prosperous African Americans in the country.<br />
<br />
A gifted student, King attended segregated public schools and at the age of 15 was admitted to Morehouse College, the alma mater of both his father and maternal grandfather, where he studied medicine and law.<br />
<br />
Although he had not intended to follow in his father’s footsteps by joining the ministry, he changed his mind under the mentorship of Morehouse’s president, Dr. Benjamin Mays, an influential theologian and outspoken advocate for racial equality. After graduating in 1948, King entered Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree, won a prestigious fellowship and was elected president of his predominantly white senior class.<br />
<br />
King then enrolled in a graduate program at Boston University, completing his coursework in 1953 and earning a doctorate in systematic theology two years later. While in Boston he met Coretta Scott, a young singer from Alabama who was studying at the New England Conservatory of Music. The couple wed in 1953 and settled in Montgomery, Alabama, where King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church.<br />
<br />
They had four children: Yolanda Denise King, Martin Luther King III, Dexter Scott King and Bernice Albertine King.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b><br /></b>
<b>MONTGOMERY BUS BOYCOTT</b><br />
The King family had been living in Montgomery for less than a year when the highly segregated city became the epicenter of the burgeoning struggle for civil rights in America, galvanized by the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision of 1954.<br />
<br />
On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, secretary of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery bus and was arrested. Activists coordinated a bus boycott that would continue for 381 days, placing a severe economic strain on the public transit system and downtown business owners. They chose Martin Luther King Jr. as the protest’s leader and official spokesman.<br />
<br />
By the time the Supreme Court ruled segregated seating on public buses unconstitutional in November 1956, King—heavily influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and the activist Bayard Rustin—had entered the national spotlight as an inspirational proponent of organized, nonviolent resistance.<br />
<br />
King had also become a target for white supremacists, who firebombed his family home that January.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE</b><br />
Emboldened by the boycott’s success, in 1957 he and other civil rights activists—most of them fellow ministers—founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), a group committed to achieving full equality for African Americans through nonviolent protest.<br />
<br />
The SCLC motto was “Not one hair of one head of one person should be harmed.” He would remain at the helm of this influential organization until his death.<br />
<br />
In his role as SCLC president, Martin Luther King Jr. traveled across the country and around the world, giving lectures on nonviolent protest and civil rights as well as meeting with religious figures, activists and political leaders.<br />
<br />
During a month-long trip to India in 1959, he had the opportunity to meet family members and followers of Gandhi, the man he described in his autobiography as “the guiding light of our technique of nonviolent social change.” King also authored several books and articles during this time.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>LETTER FROM BIRMINGHAM JAIL</b><br />
In 1960 King and his family moved to Atlanta, his native city, where he joined his father as co-pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church. This new position did not stop King and his SCLC colleagues from becoming key players in many of the most significant civil rights battles of the 1960s.<br />
<br />
Their philosophy of nonviolence was put to a particularly severe test during the Birmingham campaign of 1963, in which activists used a boycott, sit-ins and marches to protest segregation, unfair hiring practices and other injustices in one of America’s most racially divided cities.<br />
<br />
Arrested for his involvement on April 12, King penned the civil rights manifesto known as the “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” an eloquent defense of civil disobedience addressed to a group of white clergymen who had criticized his tactics.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>MARCH ON WASHINGTON</b><br />
Later that year, Martin Luther King Jr. worked with a number of civil rights and religious groups to organize the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, a peaceful political rally designed to shed light on the injustices African Americans continued to face across the country.<br />
<br />
Held on August 28 and attended by some 200,000 to 300,000 participants, the event is widely regarded as a watershed moment in the history of the American civil rights movement and a factor in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<img alt="Image result for MARTIN LUTHER jnr" src="https://media1.britannica.com/eb-media/18/1918-004-16347AC7.jpg" /><br />
<b>I HAVE A DREAM</b><br />
The March on Washington culminated in King’s most famous address, known as the “I Have a Dream” speech, a spirited call for peace and equality that many consider a masterpiece of rhetoric.<br />
<br />
Standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial—a monument to the president who a century earlier had brought down the institution of slavery in the United States—he shared his vision of a future in which “this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'”<br />
<br />
The speech and march cemented King’s reputation at home and abroad; later that year he was named “Man of the Year” by TIME magazine and in 1964 became the youngest person ever awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.<br />
<br />
In the spring of 1965, King’s elevated profile drew international attention to the violence that erupted between white segregationists and peaceful demonstrators in Selma, Alabama, where the SCLC and Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) had organized a voter registration campaign.<br />
<br />
Captured on television, the brutal scene outraged many Americans and inspired supporters from across the country to gather in Alabama and take part in the Selma to Montgomery march led by King and supported by President Lyndon B. Johnson, who sent in federal troops to keep the peace.<br />
<br />
That August, Congress passed the Voting Rights Act, which guaranteed the right to vote—first awarded by the 15th Amendment—to all African Americans.<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>ASSASSINATION OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.</b><br />
The events in Selma deepened a growing rift between Martin Luther King Jr. and young radicals who repudiated his nonviolent methods and commitment to working within the established political framework.<br />
<br />
As more militant black leaders such as Stokely Carmichael rose to prominence, King broadened the scope of his activism to address issues such as the Vietnam War and poverty among Americans of all races. In 1967, King and the SCLC embarked on an ambitious program known as the Poor People’s Campaign, which was to include a massive march on the capital.<br />
<br />
On the evening of April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King was assassinated. He was fatally shot while standing on the balcony of a motel in Memphis, where King had traveled to support a sanitation workers’ strike. In the wake of his death, a wave of riots swept major cities across the country, while President Johnson declared a national day of mourning.<br />
<br />
James Earl Ray, an escaped convict and known racist, pleaded guilty to the murder and was sentenced to 99 years in prison. He later recanted his confession and gained some unlikely advocates, including members of the King family, before his death in 1998.<br />
<br />
MLK DAY<br />
After years of campaigning by activists, members of Congress and Coretta Scott King, among others, in 1983 President Ronald Reagan signed a bill creating a U.S. federal holiday in honor of King.<br />
<br />
Observed on the third Monday of January, Martin Luther King Day was first celebrated in 1986.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02295301738931574021noreply@blogger.com0
