First American Football Camp in Nigeria Takes Place in Abuja October 17-21 (October 21, 2016)

American Football for African Mission (AFFAM) in collaboration with the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy Abuja is hosting the first American football camp in Nigeria. The camp  will run from October 17- 21, 2016.

The main objectives of the camp will be to promote American football in Nigeria by teaching the participating athletes basic skills as well as  teamwork, leadership, tolerance, and  sportsmanship.

U.S. Embassy Information Officer, Russell Brooks,  spoke to the athletes and coaches about  how sports opened doors for him before he joined the State Department . He emphasized  discipline and hard work as the catalysts for  one’s success in any  career whether it be in sports or public service.

Mr. Brooks also asked the participants to put education at the  top of their priorities because an athletic career in usually a relatively short career. Investing in an education will enable them to be successful once their playing days are over.

The five day camp will give rise to the first American Football Team Nigeria that will play at the 2017 International Champions League scheduled to be held in Rabat, Morocco. Team Nigeria will draw players from from Team Lagos Marine, Team Uyo Tigers in Calabar, the Zaria Titans in Kaduna State, and the Federal Capital Territory to ensure regional balance and a national character for the team.

AFFAM will also promote the sport among secondary school students who will  visitthe camp, observe, and learn about the game for the first time.
