Controversy Over NATO Strike in Remote Eastern Afghanistan

Afghan officials have accused NATO forces of killing civilians in an airstrike that left at least 15 people dead in the country's remote eastern region.

The police chief of eastern Kunar province on Sunday said women and children were among the victims in the strike that occurred late Saturday. NATO officials disputed the statement, saying they had no reports of civilian deaths. They said a precision strike killed 10 militants.

Many Arab and foreign insurgents are believed to operate in the region alongside the Afghan Taliban.

In other news, at least four Afghan intelligence officers were killed after a group of suspected Taliban militants launched an attack on an intelligence office near the capital.

Officials say six suicide attackers detonated bombs outside the building Sunday in Maidan Shahr, the capital of Wardak province.

At least four soldiers guarding the compound were killed and five attackers died in the assault. More than 12 civilians were also wounded.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

Civilian deaths in Afghanistan have been a major point of contention between the Afghan government and U.S.-led international forces fighting militants in the country.
